An Affair (by which) to Remember
By Michael T. Lynch
Every now and then I do something with cars that takes me back to the joys I encountered when I first became involved with foreign cars. By the time I was in my very early teens, I had a pretty good exposure to American racing, including midgets, sprints and what were then called big cars – Indianapolis machinery. I saw a Jaguar XK-120 on the street in Cleveland and was blown away.

Marin-Sonoma Concours, May 17th 2009
Tom Price’s Ferrari 250 GTO is seen at Laguna Seca. It will be on the lawn at the first Marin Sonoma Concours d’Elegance on May 17. This car won the Dakar 12 Hours in 1962 and also had GT class wins at Spa, the Nurburgring, Reims, Montlhery and the Mount Ventoux hillclimb.

If automotive enthusiasm is a leading indicator, then the stock market may be due for a turnaround. Marin County California collector Charlie Goodman will launch the Marin Sonoma Concours d’Elegance on May 17. Goodman is not only undeterred by the present financial situation, but he is celebrating the 1929 crash by allowing free entry to cars of that model year, which will be grouped in a special display. We hope this isn’t tempting fate.

New Motorcycle Event at the Quail in May
As the Quail Lodge prepares for the Quail Motorcycle Gathering, this is the quality of entry they hope for. This Ducati 750 Imola is thought to be Paul Smart’s backup bike for the 1972 Imola 200, which Smart won, putting Ducati on the road to unmatched success in World Superbike racing. In 2003, a new event was added to the August Monterey Peninsula Automotive Festival Week, The Quail–“A Motorsports Gathering.” Since then, this brilliant combination of cars, cuisine, celebrities and cognoscenti, set on the verdant grass of the golf course that is part of the Quail Lodge Resort and Golf Club, has become the hottest ticket during the week, with a sellout taking place each January in less than two hours. The Management of that event hopes to repeat their success with its premier all-motorcycle concours on Saturday, May 9th. [Read more…] about New Motorcycle Event at the Quail in May
Lynch at the Quail 2008
We lost one of our finest when World Champion Phil Hill left us on August 28. He was enjoying cars and his many friends and admirers right up until the end. Phil won three races at the old Pebble Beach road course and also won the Pebble Beach Concours twice with cars he restored personally. Here, he poses at The Quail with former Ferrari President, Jean Todt, who managed Ferrari’s racing team during the Schumacher era. Credit: Marcel Massini
