PALM BEACH, FL, JAN 22

Ex-Villeneuve 312 T5 sold for $660,000 including buyer's premium.

On the same busy weekend, on the East Coast with no SpeedChannel coverage, the Gooding Auction in Palm Beach didn’t do badly either. “Initial data indicates that 27 cars were sold totaling nearly $7 million.” said the media report. This averages out to $260,000 per car. However, that figure includes the record sale of a 1938 Talbot Lago, which almost matched the now famous BJ GM bus, making $3.9 million, including commission. “To set a world record during our first year in Palm Beach is remarkable,” said David Gooding, president of Gooding & Company. “The Talbot-Lago is just one indication of the high caliber of cars that were offered here, and we are already planning next year’s impressive lineup!”

It might be noted that unlike the Barrett-Jackson event, Gooding was a reserve auction, meaning the of the 55 cars entered, 27 sold and 28 did not meet the reserve price.

Another star of the show was the ex-Villeneuve. 1980 Ferrari 312, which sold for $660,000. Cavallino magazine rated the 312 T5 worth between $650,000 and 975,000, so while not a spectacular price, was within the estimated price range.

The only other Ferrari sold was a 1967 330GT, sold at $143,000 including buyer's premium.

A 1966 Maserati Mistral coupe sold at 57,200, again including buyer’s premium.

Unfortunately, the Gooding event might well have been a silent auction, since it got lost in the Barrett Jackson hype and had no live nationwide TV coverage. That may be changing. According to Alyson Seligman, of the Carey O'Donnell PR Group, "Gooding & Company’s inaugural auction at the 2004 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was televised live on Auction HP on the Vroom Network and their 2005 Pebble Beach auction was taped and will be aired on TLC and Discovery."

Given the TV success of the Barrett-Jackson Auction, we hope that Gooding and other auction houses will soon be featured on similar channels
