Alfa Romeo at Geneva 2006

Photos and story by Alessandro Gerelli

Within the Fiat group of car companies, Alfa Romeo has always been the sporty brand, excluding Ferrari of course. Therefore, its range should always include cars with a clear sports attitude.

After a few crisis years which saw the closure of the historical factories near Milano (Portello and Arese), Alfa Romeo is now improving its market share, with a middle-high range of cars that are able to satisfy the requirements of its traditional customers all over Europe. These offerings include the 147, the recently introduced middle class 159, the GT, and the wonderful coupè Brera introduced in 2005.

But, something was still missing; a station wagon and a spider. Both were introduced as a world premiere at Geneva. In particular the Spider has a nice body designed together by Giugiaro and Pininfarina. The front looks very like the Brera, the roof is electric and completely automatic. The engines are the same as the Brera with 4 cylinders - 2.2 litres and 185 bhp, and a 3.2 liter V-6 with 260 bhp, together with a 6 gear manual gearbox.

New Alfa 159 station wagon fills a gap in the Alfa lineup.

Brera was introduced in 2005, still fresh a year later.

This one is the Alfa Romeo GT, noted for the slightly different grille treatment.

Distinctive rear end of the new Spider.

The front is from the Brera.

Interior is busy but many traditional Alfa touches here.

Overall, a wonderful new spider for Alfa; US Bound?
